Consumers
have the Right to Redress in terms of goods and services
they purchase or hire under section 105 of the ICCC Act.
In the event that this right is threatened or violated,
the consumer can seek help or lodge complaint with the
ICCC.
Consumer
Awareness
Awareness
is an important part of informing the consumers of their
basic rights and responsibilities and promoting their
interest under the law. Consumers are educated and informed
through awareness programs and information dissemination
via the use of print and audio media. The ICCC has also
been involved in conducting workshops, seminars and visitations
as part of its objective to create and generate consumers awareness.
Price
Monitoring and Surveillance
Certain
essential goods and services are declared by the National
Government and gazetted for price controlled and monitoring purposes for the welfare and benefit of
consumers. These includes the conduct of regulated entities such as Post PNG Limited, PNG Harbour, Telikom PNG Limited, MVIL, PNG Power, EDA RANU and Water Board.
ICCC
compliance and enforcement officers are stationed in the
Southern and Momase, Highlands and Islands Regional Offices throughout Papua New Guinea to ensure that businesses are setting their prices in accordance to the General
Price Orders for controlled goods and services and their tradings are in accordance to the regulatory agreements for regulated entities. These includes receiving and investigating complaints in relation to the provision of all consumable
goods and services.
Weights & Measures
The
ICCC is responsible for ensuring that all forms of weighing
instruments used in trading are certified correct for trade
purposes. These also applies to ensuring that businesses have proper labeling of products and complying to
international recognized quality and safety standards.
These requirements are necessary under the Trade Measurement,
Packaging and Bread Acts enforced by ICCC.
Businesses
are morally and legally obliged to conduct their trading
honestly and correctly in the weighing instruments they
use, correct labeling of their products and consumers likewise
are responsible to ensure they understand their rights
to safety and information.
