Telikom & VAS

The Commission also declared data services, those data services supplied above the voice bandwidth to be called value added services (VAS). The VAS services are supplied by holders of VAS licences on Telikom’s network. Telikom has three types of Telecommunications;

  • Public General Telecommunications Carrier licence;
  • Public Mobile Telecommunications Carrier licence (offloaded to a consortium now known as Bemobile under different management but has 50% share in BMobile); and,
  • Value added services licence (VAS includes carrier grade VAS and ISP grade VAS). With Telikom’s VAS, it can wholesale and retail data (internet) services to other VAS (ISP) including its own ISP

The Mobile Carriers in addition to their mobile licence have been issued VAS licence (Carrier Grade VAS) to supply data services (internet service) through mobile phones.

So far the Commission has issued sixteen (16) VAS licences; three (3) Carrier grade VAS and thirteen Internet service providers (ISP) grade VAS.
